Working with sports teams and businesses for over 21 years, we have seen what improves and what has a negative effect on performance, especially with predominantly female teams.

There are four areas crucial to improving team performance and overall satisfaction. We put it into the acronym: T.E.A.M.

Team Building:

Creating time and space for teams to have fun, bond, and build trust is essential to a healthy working environment and culture. Incorporating exercises that help your team members understand one another can decrease conflict and increase compassion.

Effective Communication:

We have found that effective communication comes down to the following factors: personality, physiology, fears, motivators, strengths, weaknesses, and mindset. The way people respond to constructive criticism and are motivated is all based on the above factors. When you learn how to communicate in a way that speaks an individual’s language, everyone wins.

Active Personal Growth:

Allowing for a personal growth focus over performance focus, can have a positive impact on overall performance. A team member who is growing personally will outperform the person who is solely focused on performance every single time. Success comes at the rate of a person’s personal growth. Females often lack confidence or the ability to communicate their needs effectively. Providing them with tools for personal growth will help them create more success and become better team members.

Managing Stress:

Stress, and how someone handles stress, will directly impact their productivity, performance, and decision-making skills. Females are more susceptible to stress, exhaustion, and adrenal fatigue because they take on more home life responsibilities than their male counterparts. Providing yourself and your team with the tools to identify and manage stress allows for open communication and proactively cuts down on conflict within the workplace.

In addition to the four areas covered by the T.E.A.M. acronym, there are a few other things that can help improve team performance and overall satisfaction when females are involved. These include:

  • Creating a culture of inclusion and belonging. This means making sure that everyone feels welcome and respected, regardless of their gender.
  • Providing opportunities for professional development. This can help team members feel challenged and engaged in their work.
  • Encouraging work-life balance. This can help team members avoid burnout and maintain a healthy work-life relationship.
  • Ensuring each team member is fulfilled in their role. You will never have to work to motivate a team member when they are working in their zone of genius because they will love what they do.

Female team members are more susceptible to competitiveness, jealousy, conflict, and burnout.

We have seen this T.E.A.M. approach effective within female sports teams and business teams.

By taking these steps, you can create a team that is both productive and enjoyable to work with.
